Winchester Brew - 25th September '25

The Michaelmas Fair at the Hospital of St Cross promises fun for all the family - a perfect outing before summer finally slips away - and it’s our featured event this week.

And that’s just the start. This week’s line-up ranges from a Disney quiz, to a fashion show to a sourdough baking class, plus a full slate of music, stand-up comedy and special film events. Hopefully something for everyone.

This year will include a Medieval Living History Re-enactment – The Free Co Of Aquitaine. With the ‘Mercenary Archers’ from the 100 years War with their early medieval camp, longbow armoury, demonstrations and authentic 14c domestic set up.

Did You Know? In the graveyard of Winchester Cathedral, there is a famous tombstone for a soldier named Thomas Thetcher, who died in 1764 after drinking a "small beer." The epitaph on his grave, which warns of the dangers of excessive drinking, was a powerful inspiration to the American co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, Bill Wilson. The Winchester gravestone is mentioned on the very first page of the original "Big Book" of AA.
