☕️ Welcome to the Brew

Winchester hits full festive stride this week. The Cathedral Christmas Market opens its doors once again - twinkly, busy, brilliant as ever - and the first wave of mulled-wine wanderers will be out in force. Early birds can pair it with something a little different: maybe a weekend pop-up exhibition from Canvas Creatives, just down the road at The Nutshell, showing original work from eight local artists.

And then comes Monday’s Lantern Parade, that perfect festive moment when hundreds of glowing creations drift through the city. It’s always wholesome, slightly chaotic, and strangely moving - and this year’s theme nods to Jane Austen’s 250th birthday with plenty of sparkle.

Around all that, the city’s doing its usual trick of packing every spare corner with something interesting: jazz mornings for little ones, candlelit Vivaldi, ceilidh nights, prog rock, abstract art workshops, planetarium rock shows, local football fixtures, comedy at The Arc, jewellery-making at the Cathedral, and a whole lot more in between.

A warm welcome to everyone joining us this week. Lovely to have you here. 🎄

🔥 The Roaster’s Choice - Winchester’s Christmas Market

Our featured pick of the events this week.

🎁🛍️🎄 Winchester Cathedral’s Christmas Market is back from this Friday and it’s worth weaving into your December plans if you haven’t already. The wooden chalets, the smell of mulled wine drifting through the air, the mix of handmade gifts and cosy food stalls - it’s the same charming setup we all know, and it always manages to be a must-do on our Christmas list!

We know it does get busy, so the gentler moments are usually early in the day or on weekday evenings. The Food Court is reliably good this year, with everything from hog roasts to samosa bowls and crumble pots, plus plenty for anyone avoiding meat or gluten. It’s the sort of place you can wander into “just for a look” and somehow end up staying for a snack and a warm drink.

And while you’re there, it’s worth stepping into the Cathedral for a moment of calm. The carol concerts and Advent events give it a really warm feel this time of year. Once you head back out, the whole city has that gentle December buzz…plenty going on, but never so much that you can’t just wander around and enjoy it. The market is simply a nice anchor point for a wintry afternoon.

When: From 21st November to 22nd December. Open till 6pm Mon-Weds, 7pm Thurs, 8pm Fri-Sat and till 5pm on Sundays.

Where: Cathedral Grounds

A bit of froth to end on…

Did You Know? Winchester’s last official population count in the 2021 Census put the city at 48,478 residents, with today’s estimates hovering just over 50,000.
That’s a long way from the 5,826 people counted in the first national census of 1801 - a city rebuilt after centuries of plagues, siege and political upheaval.

Riddle Me This: I was 25 in 1990 but only 15 in 2000. How is that possible? Last week’s answer: The letter “R”.

Brain Teaser: On an analog 12-hour clock, how many times do the hour and minute hands overlap in a 24-hour day? Last week’s answer: He’s playing Monopoly.
